Body Composition & Fitness Testing
Know your numbers, understand your health. Track your progress. At Optimum Exercise Physiology, we offer precise physiological assessments to help you better understand your body and your health.
Whether you are looking to understand your lean body mass, body fat percentage, or your current aerobic fitness, our assessments provide you with clear data to guide your health and fitness journey.
Body Composition Scanning
See more than just body weight.
Body weight only tells part of the story. Our medical-grade body composition scanning, through the Tanita DC-360, provides a fast, non-invasive, and detailed analysis of what your body is made of – and more importantly, how that weight is distributed between muscle, water, and body fat.
This allows you to gain a much clearer picture of what’s actually changing in your body as you work towards your health and fitness goals.
What your body composition report includes:
- Body weight
- Body fat percentage
- Fat mass
- Muscle mass
- Total body water
- Basal Metabolic Rate
- Visceral fat rating and range
- Metabolic age
- Segmental body composition
- Trend tracking
Why choose a body composition scan?
- Gain a deeper understanding of your body beyond the scales
- Accurately track your progress (e.g. if you have caught/lost body weight, it can tell you if that was muscle or fat loss)
- Tailor your training and nutrition based on actual data
- Identify areas for improvement across the body
- Monitor changes in body water and hydration
- Track your progress effectively and stay motivated
Key Preparation Tips for Best Results:
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water the day before (approx. 2 liters) to ensure you are well hydrated.
- Exercise: Avoid heavy exercise for 12 hours prior to your scan, as this can affect body water and hydration levels.
- Consistency: Try to ensure your hydration and food intake are similar if you are coming for repeat scans.
- Timing: For the most accurate tracking, we recommend booking subsequent scans at a similar time of day.
- Attire: You must be able to remove your shoes and socks to stand on the scales.

Cardiovascular Fitness Testing
What is your aerobic fitness?
Cardiovascular or aerobic fitness is one of the most significant indicators of long-term health and physical function. At Optimum, we use specialized exercise testing to measure how efficiently your body uses oxygen during exercise.
What is VO2 max?
VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intensive exercise. It is widely considered the “gold standard” measure of cardiovascular fitness. Measuring your VO2 max provides you with a clear benchmark of your current fitness levels and allows you to track improvements as you train.
Who might want a VO2 max test?
- Individuals wanting a health benchmark
- People wanting to improve their longevity and overall health
- Athletes looking to optimize performance
- Runners and cyclists wanting clearer data on their current fitness
- Anyone looking to see if their training program is actually improving their fitness
How it works:
We use a standardized submaximal testing protocol, which means you are working at a challenging but safe intensity level. From this, we can accurately calculate your VO2 max and provide information to help guide your training.
The assessment is completed on either our treadmill or bike and takes approximately 45-60 minutes including set up, testing, and review of your results.
Running Assessments
Whether you are training for your first 5km or look to improve your marathon times, our running assessments look at the key elements of running, including:
- Injury history review
- Functional movement assessment
- Strength and mobility testing
- Running technique assessment
- A clear plan to help you move better, run stronger, and reduce your risk of injury
